What are pragmatics?

Pragmatics are your child social skills. For example:

  • eye contact

  • turn taking skills

  • topic maintenance / topic initiation

  • name recognition

  • feelings identification

How do we know if there is a problem?

  • Limited eye contact

  • Inappropriate body language

  • Problems taking turns

  • Talking about the wrong thing at the wrong time

  • Using the ‘wrong’ type of language, in the ‘wrong’ situation.

Difficulty understanding & using the social rules of conversation can lead to exclusion by peers & problems with self-esteem.
